NCC Hosts Free Photo Restoration Program

An upcoming program, FREE and open to the public, to restore water-damaged photos will be held at Nassau Community College (NCC) on Sunday, April 7, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

CARE-for-Sandy (Cherished Albums Restoration Effort), an organization providing free scanning and volunteer restoration services, will accept up to 50 Sandy-damaged photos per individual or immediate family. They are also offering to take a family portrait.

The services provided by this very special program aim to digitally restore cherished memories of those who suffered damages as a result of October’s devastating storm.

Photos brought to the event must be separated, and reasonably clean and dry, as wet images cannot be scanned. Slides, negative and VHS tapes cannot be accepted at this time.

Professor Carolyn Monastra of NCC’s Art Department was instrumental in bringing the volunteer services of CARE-for-Sandy to NCC’s campus, as it was a direct result of work she did while on sabbatical last year photographing landscapes affected by climate change.

Due to the connection she has now made between her artistic/academic work and a real, immediate community need, 10 classes-worth of NCC students have become involved with CARE-for-Sandy as a result of her efforts.
