Blood Drive at Firefighters Museum Today

Third annual drive commemorating Sept. 11, 2001 as a day of remembrance.

The Long Island Volunteer Center (LIVC) is again teaming up with the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center to host a blood drive Sept. 9 at the museum in E. Garden City.

LIVC is asking Long Islanders to donate blood to pay tribute to 9/11 victims and heroes. People of all blood types are encouraged to donate. The blood drive will take place between 2-8 p.m. Registration is recommended.

The past two drives collected 107 pints of blood. LIVC is hoping to collect 200 pints after the Sept. 9 drive, according to a release.

“There is no better way to remember those lost on 9/11 than by taking action to help others survive. Now in its third year, LIVC’s life-saving blood drive continues to grow bigger each year thanks to the generosity of our fellow Long Islanders,” said Simone Solz Leo, blood drive chair at the Long Island Volunteer Center.

“There is a constant need for blood donations in our region. Becoming a volunteer donor is a significant way to mark the September 11th anniversary and participate in the country’s National Day of Service & Remembrance.”

Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh more than 110 pounds and be in general good health with no tattoos for the past 12 months. (Sixteen year olds may donate blood with parental consent. Over the age of 76 requires a doctor’s note.)

For more information, contact the Long Island Volunteer Center at 564-5482 or visit www.longislandvolunteercenter.org. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, register here.

The Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center is located along Museum Row onCharles Lindbergh Blvd. in E. Garden City.
