Car Crashes Into Rear Yard Feet Away From Playing Children

A Garden City woman was charged with driving while impaired and reckless driving.

An accident at the corner of Suffolk Lane and Fifteenth Street at approximately 5 p.m. Wednesday landed a Garden City woman in jail.

The 56-year-old resident crashed into the corner home's backyard, landing just feet away from children playing on a trampoline. The woman's blood alcohol content was .06 percent, police said.

She was arrested for driving while impaired and reckless driving.

According to police commissioner Kenneth Jackson, the woman was heading westbound on Fifteenth Street attempting to make a U-turn when she apparently stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake.

No injuries were reported during the incident.

Neighbors who heard the "loud crash" told Patch the woman slammed into a retaining wall and went airborne before landing in the rear yard just feet from the children and the home's gas meter.

"Thank God those kids on the trampoline didn't get injured," the neighbor said. "She's a very lucky lady that she did not blow up that house or kill someone."
