Crime Blotter: Another Phone Scam Victim, Drug Bust on Ring Road

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.


Aug. 14: A Fed-Ex package was stolen from the front porch of a New Hyde Park Road residence.

Aug. 14: An air-conditioning unit fell from a Franklin Avenue third floor apartment striking and damaging a parked pick-up truck. The apartment was under renovation at the time of occurrence. There were no reported injuries.

Aug. 14: Phone Scam: An elderly person sent a check to an unknown person for an undisclosed amount of money after receiving a phone call from that person who claimed the victim had won a sweepstakes and needed the check to cover the taxes. Anyone with information is requested to call Garden City Detectives at 465-4150.

Aug. 14: Officers responded to a one-vehicle accident on Franklin Avenue south of 7th Street. The vehicle struck a light pole and a fire hydrant before overturning. The driver, a male 24-year-old from Mineola, was injured and transported to a local hospital. He was also cited for driving with no license, and suspended privileges.

Aug. 15: An Apple iPhone that was left on a park bench at Grove Street Park was reported stolen.

Aug. 16: A vehicle owner reports that two youths stole an iPod from her parked vehicle in Parking Field 9E. They are described as male white, 15 years old, one wearing a maroon shirt, and the other wearing a blue shirt.

Aug. 17: A male 29-year-old from Hewlett was arrested at a Franklin Avenue doctor’s office after he visited his wife there in violation of a Nassau County Court Stay Away Order.

Aug. 17: A locked bicycle was reported stolen from a bike rack located on the south side of the Merillon Avenue train station.

Aug. 18: As a result of an investigation on Ring Road, detectives arrested a male 26-year-old from Rosedale for possession of marijuana.

Aug. 18: A battery booster pack was stolen from a vehicle parked at a Hamilton Place residence.

Aug. 18: Garden City officers assisted the Nassau County Police Department with a three-vehicle accident on Old Country Road and Russell Drive. Two of the drivers were transported to a local hospital for minor injuries.

Aug. 19: Officers Wehr and Punch, along with Garden City detectives, arrested two subjects who had stolen four pairs of designer sun glasses valued at $610 from Lord & Taylor. The subjects, a male 50-year-old and a male 51-year-old, both from Hempstead, had fled the store after the thefts, but were apprehended by the officers on Franklin Avenue. Upon investigation, both subjects were found to be in possession of more than $500 in stolen property from the Garden City Walgreens. The male 50-year-old was also charged with an outstanding Nassau County petit larceny warrant.

Aug. 19: Officer Roumeliotis arrested a male 23-year-old from Hicksville for leaving the scene of an accident on Aug. 5 in Nassau County Parking Field #2. He was also charged with unlicensed operation.

Aug. 19: A Garden City parking permit was stolen from a vehicle parked at the Garden City railroad station.

Aug. 20: Loose money and a pair of sunglasses were removed from a vehicle parked at an Osborne Road residence.

Aug. 20: Several scratches were found on the side of a vehicle parked in Nassau County Field #3.

Aug. 20: Several driveway lights were found damaged on the property of a St. James St. South residence.

Court News:

Aug. 19: Officers impounded vehicles in Parking Fields 7S and 9W. The vehicles were declared as scofflaws by the Garden City Justice Court due to unpaid parking tickets.
