Crime Blotter: School Zone Speeding and Sleeping at the Wheel

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

May 1
: A joint investigation by Officer Walsh and M&T Bank personnel resulted in the arrest of a 50-year-old female from Valley Stream for attempting to cash a $23,500 fraudulent check in the name of a Maryland business. She was charged with attempted grand larceny and possession of a forged instrument.

May 1: Officer Reilly stopped and issued a female 42-year-old from Franklin Square traffic tickets for speeding on Rockaway Avenue in a school zone (49 mph in a 20-mph zone) and for passing a Stop sign. She was also cited for driving while the vehicle registration was suspended and for no insurance.

May 2: A commercial vehicle inspection was conducted on Clinton Road resulting in 12 vehicles being inspected of which seven were placed out of service and 72 tickets issued for various traffic and safety violations, including two suspended license violations, three defective brake violations, a defective safety chain violation and eight overweight violations.

May 3: A male 57-year-old from Hicksville was operating a box truck northbound on Rockaway Avenue when he struck the Cherry Valley overpass causing significant damage to the truck. He was cited with disregarding a bridge height clearance sign.

May 3: Officer Caputo arrested a female 46-year-old from Floral Park for the theft of $260 in assorted merchandise from Sears.

May 3: Upon responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle on Willow Street, Officer Sansone stopped the vehicle on Clinton Road. The driver, a male 19-year-old from Bensonhurst, was cited for unlicensed operation, unregistered auto, uninsured operation and driving with an apparent fraudulent Maryland temporary license plate.

May 4: A mountain bike was reported stolen from a Euston Road garage.

May 4: Officers are investigating an accident at the intersection of New Hyde Park Road and Stewart Avenue where an unknown vehicle traveling west made an abrupt turn causing it to strike another vehicle traveling south, operated by a female 27-year-old from Hempstead, which caused her to then strike a telephone pole. She received a minor leg injury. The initial vehicle left the scene without stopping.

May 5: Officer Dallolio observed a male 37-year-old from Port Washington sleeping in his vehicle at a green traffic light on Rockaway Avenue at Old Country Road. The vehicle was in drive and the subject’s foot was on the brake. The officer was able to reach into the vehicle and turn the ignition off. The subject was arrested for DWI (.12 percent blood alcohol content), impeding traffic and unlicensed operation.

May 5: Office Reilly was on patrol when he observed a vehicle in a road rage incident where it cut off other vehicles. Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver, a male 33-year-old from Hempstead, was arrested for aggravated unlicensed 2nd degree for having 14 license suspensions, unsafe lane usage and an unregistered vehicle. The vehicle was impounded.

May 5: A resident reports an identity theft where unauthorized transactions in an amount exceeding $8,000 were made against a bank account.

May 6: An iPhone was reported stolen from a vehicle parked at a Fourth Street residence.

May 6: Officer Buonaiuto cited a driver, a female 22-year-old from Elmont, for passing a red light on Stewart Avenue at Wellington Road. The vehicle was impounded after it was determined to be unregistered and uninspected.

May 7: An unauthorized purchase exceeding $3,000 was made against a resident’s credit card account at a store located in Nassau County.

Court News:

Garden City police officers impounded two vehicles from Parking Field 9E on APril 30 and another vehicle parked in Field 12 on May 6 for being Garden City Village Court scofflaws due to unpaid parking tickets.
