Crime Blotter: Jewelry Thief Nabbed, Struck Overpass

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Sept. 3
: The front bumper to a vehicle parked at Adelphi University was damaged by unknown means.

Sept. 4
: Officer Walsh responded to a report of a theft of numerous pieces of jewelry and watches by a subject who had fled Sears. After a brief foot pursuit, Officer Walsh, with the aid of a court officer, apprehended the subject, a male 47-year-old from Hempstead, in the vicinity of the Nassau County Court complex. Upon further investigation, the subject was charged with a similar theft at Sears where he stole assorted clothing valued at more than $1,000, and an outstanding Nassau County warrant for larceny.

: Loose money was removed from a vehicle parked on Tenth Street.

Sept. 4
: Two Razor scooters were stolen from the front of a Boylston Street residence.

Sept. 4
: An Old Country Road business reports three forged company checks totaling $3,000 were cashed at a New York City bank.

Sept. 5
: A bicycle was stolen from a garage on Whitehall Boulevard.

Sept. 5
: A vehicle left the scene without stopping and exchanging information after backing into and damaging a vehicle parked in the Walgreen's parking lot on Franklin Avenue.

Sept. 5
: A resident received a phone call from a male who stated that he was her son and that he was arrested in another state and needed bail money to be sent to him. It was determined to be a scam after the parent hung up the phone and called her son who stated that he did not call her.

Sept. 6
: An electronic item was reported stolen from a vehicle parked at a Cathedral Avenue residence.

Sept. 6
: A zippered plastic case was accidentally left in a bathroom in the Garden City Public Library. When the owner returned later it was missing. The case was later recovered in the library’s book drop minus $200.

Sept. 7
: A bicycle was stolen from an unlocked garage on Sixth Street.

Sept. 7
: Police officers assisted the Garden City Fire Department at a garage fire on Kildare Road.

Sept. 7
: A male 60-year-old from West Hempstead was arrested for leaving the scene of a property damage accident on Hilton Avenue and Fourth Street. The subject fled the scene after the accident but was followed by a Nassau County detective who witnessed the event until he could be stopped by a Garden City officer.

Sept. 8
: Loose money was removed from vehicles parked at two Brook Street residences, a Chestnut Street residence and an East Drive residence.

Sept. 9
: A joint investigation by Nassau County probation officers and Garden City police officers resulted in the arrest of a male 40-year-old from Uniondale. The subject was arrested for driving to and from his probation appointment without an interlock system in his vehicle as ordered by a judge due to a prior DWI conviction. He was also charged with two counts of driving with a suspended license and uninsured operation.

Sept. 10
: Officer Reilly, while assigned to a school crossing detail, observed a male 31-year-old from Hempstead driving a truck northbound on Cherry Valley Avenue when he disregarded bridge height clearance signs before striking the Cherry Valley train trestle. Officer Hudak conducted a truck inspection at the scene and the driver was cited for disregarding height clearance signs, broken windshield, fuel tank cap missing, windshield wipers defective, two defective brake violations, improperly secured gas container, improper shipping papers, missing hazmat placard and uninsured operation. MTA personnel responded to the scene and determined that there was no apparent damage to the bridge structure.

Sept. 10
: Officers responded to the Franklin Avenue train crossing for the gates being stuck in the down position due to a disabled train.
