Crime Blotter: Drunk Driver Flees Accident

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

July 25: The police department collected 92 used cell phones from residents, and forwarded them to the Cell Phones for Soldiers Program, which provides service men and woman oversees the ability to have phone access to contact family members and friends back home.

July 31: An unlocked bicycle was stolen from Parking Field 7N.

July 31: Officers are investigating a property damage auto accident on Franklin Avenue and Twelfth Street where one of the vehicles left the scene without exchanging information.

July 31: An iPad and an iPod were stolen from a vehicle parked in Parking Field 5.

July 31: An officer stopped a commercial vehicle on Clinton Road for unsafe tires. Upon an investigation, the driver was cited for driving an overweight vehicle and unsafe tires and was also issued two hazardous material violations for unsecured fuel containers.

Aug. 1: A flower pot belonging to a Roxbury Road residence was found smashed in the street. A lamp post to another Roxbury Road residence was pulled from the ground. A No Parking sign was found to be pulled from the ground on Somerset Avenue.

Aug. 1: Officers responded to a traffic condition at the New Hyde Park railroad crossing where the signal arm to the crossing gate was broken after apparently being struck by a passing vehicle.

Aug. 2: There were two reported larcenies from vehicles parked at two residences on Maxwell Road. An iPod was removed from one vehicle and an iPod and loose change was removed from the other vehicle.

Aug. 2: Cosmetic supplies were removed from a vehicle parked at a Franklin Avenue business.

Aug. 2: Stereo headphones valued at $100 were stolen from an office at a Stewart Avenue business.

Aug. 3: Officer Conti stopped a vehicle on Franklin Avenue at Ninth Street for no registration and inspection stickers on the front windshield. The vehicle was impounded and the driver, a female 30-year-old from Elmont, was cited for driving with a suspended license, unregistered auto, uninspected auto, switched license plates and several equipment violations.

Aug. 3: Officers responded to a traffic light malfunction on Hilton Avenue at Ninth Street.

Aug. 4: Officers responded to a report of an accident on Meadow Street where a vehicle struck two trees and a fire hydrant. Witnesses state that the operator of the vehicle fled the scene on foot in a westerly direction. Officer Punch searched the area and discovered the subject, a male 23-year-old from Hempstead, on Cedar Place in Garden City. As a result of the investigation, the operator was arrested for DWI (.12 percent blood alcohol content), unlicensed operation and leaving the scene of an accident.

Aug. 5: Officer Roumeliotis stopped a commercial vehicle on Washington Avenue for an improperly secured license plate and other equipment violations. The driver, a male 34-year-old from Copiague, was subsequently arrested for having no license and four open driver license suspensions.

Aug. 5: A handicap parking permit was discovered missing from a vehicle parked at a Stewart Avenue apartment complex.

Aug. 5: Officer Touhy arrested a male 46-year-old from Levittown for the theft of nine cans of baby formula from CVS.

Aug. 5: A locked mountain bike was reported stolen from a bike rack at the Garden City Railroad station.

Aug. 5: A laptop computer and other electronic accessories were reported stolen from a vehicle parked on Huntington Road.

Aug. 6: A male 28-year-old from Brooklyn was arrested for the theft of three bottles of soft drinks from a Franklin Avenue restaurant on Aug. 5 and 6.
