Former St. Paul's Teacher Arrested on Child Porn Charges

Christopher Wheeler taught music and spelling at the former boys school in Garden City during the 1980s, according to village archives.

A former St. Paul's School teacher has been arrested in Delaware after a search of his home recovered multiple images of child pornography, according to Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden.

Christopher Wheeler, who began his career at St. Paul's in Garden City in 1984, was charged with 25 counts of dealing in child pornography. According to published reports, the charges stem from a recent investigation into allegations he sexually abused two brothers about 30 years ago and another young boy more than a decade ago.

Wheeler, 53, is included in the 1985, 1986 and 1989 St. Paul's "Sigillum" yearbooks, village historian Suzie Alvey confirmed. He taught music and spelling at the school, Alvey said.

Wheeler most recently served as headmaster of the prestigious Tower Hill School in Wilmington. Any mention of Wheeler has been removed from the school's website.

According to Biden, an arrest warrant was obtained for Wheeler on Oct. 30 after Child Predator Task Force detectives recovered the images on computers seized by investigators during a search of Wheeler’s home and office.

Wheeler turned himself into police Friday. He is being held at Wilmington's Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $1.5 million cash bail. The criminal investigation is ongoing.

The Tower Hill School Board of Trustees appointed Harry Baetjer as the acting head of the school. Baetjer has served Tower Hill in teaching and administrative capacities for over 43 years.
