Lock Your Doors: Police Warn of Car Break-Ins

Garden City police are asking residents to remember to lock their car doors after several reported thefts from unlocked vehicles.

The Garden City Police Department has received multiple reports of money and other items stolen from unlocked vehicles parked throughout the village.

Vehicle break-ins are on the rise throughout Nassau and Suffolk, police commissioner Kenneth Jackson said, adding that his department is currently investigating the trend with Suffolk police.

"We are trying to pull our resources together to figure out who these suspects are, who these perpetrators are and work together to arrest these people," Jackson said, reminding residents to lock their vehicles when not in use.

This month alone, the department has reported more than a dozen incidents where mostly money and electronic devices, like GPS systems, were stolen.

The incidents span the entire village, from Meadow Street to St. Paul's Place:

  • July 16: Loose money was removed from a vehicle parked at a Meadow Street residence.
  • July 13: Loose change was removed from a vehicle parked at a Cherry Valley Road residence.
  • July 9: Loose change and a GPS were removed from a vehicle parked at a St. Paul’s Place residence.
  • July 6: A GPS device was removed from a vehicle parked at an Amherst Street residence.
  • July 3: Loose change was removed from a vehicle parked in Garden City Parking Field #10.
  • June 29: Money ($54) was stolen from a vehicle parked on Spruce Street. Other vehicles on Osborne Road, Old Country Road and Huntington Road were entered and reported the theft of small amounts of change and money.
  • June 26: Loose money was stolen from a vehicle parked on Pine Street. Other vehicles on Clinton Road, Euston Road and Brook Street were entered with no reported loss at this time.
