Hempstead Teen Busted For Vehicle Larcenies, Trespassing

The 16-year-old was in possession of "apparent stolen property" when apprehended in the vicinity of Garden Street.

A Hempstead teen was arrested Monday after a Garden Street resident alerted police that he heard a car alarm sound and saw someone rifling through cars, Garden City police said.

Officer Oswald observed the 16-year-old fleeing the area and upon an investigation arrested him for trespassing on one residential property and the larceny of items from a vehicle parked on another residential property, police said.

The teen was in possession of "other apparent stolen property," according to the police report.

This was the second arrest in two weeks involving vehicle larcenies. On Nov. 6, an alert Locust Street resident and some good police work led to the arrest of James Robinson, 45, of West Hempstead, who police believe may be responsible for hundreds of vehicle larcenies in the village and beyond.

Robinson had already been arrested five times by Garden City police and 52 times prior throughout Nassau County, according to police commissioner Kenneth Jackson. At the time of his arrest, police found property on Robinson which they were able to tie to one crime already.

In September, Garden City police arrested a Bronx man they say was responsible for numerous larcenies from vehicles in the village in August and September.
Steven Washington, 26, was arrested Sept. 6 and was also charged with the theft of credit cards from one vehicle and the theft of bank checks from another vehicle. Detectives said Washington also committed forgery when he cashed three of the stolen checks for $1,800. Police nabbed him as he was reporting to his parole officer in Brooklyn.

Police encourage any residents who are missing property from their vehicles between Nov. 18 and 19 to contact Garden City detectives at 465-4150.
