Dr. Rita Melikian Selected 'Outstanding Educator of the Year'

The Science Museum of Long Island honors Garden City Public Schools' director of educational technology.

Dr. Rita Melikian, Garden City Public Schools' director of educational technology, has been selected “Outstanding Educator of the Year” by The Science Museum of Long Island (SMLI).

Dr. Melikian will be honored Nov. 14, along with Dr. Gayle Insler, provost of Adelphi University (Outstanding Leader of the Year), Frank Pelliccione from Flushing Bank (Roni Reaves Community Service Award) and Kenneth White from Brookhaven National Laboratory (Champion for Science Award) at the 2013 “Big Bang Ball” to be held at the Garden City Country Club.

Dr. Melikian received her doctorate from Teacher’s College, Columbia University, and has worked in Garden City Public Schools for the past 17 years.

“I have always had a keen interest in science,” Dr. Melikian said. “I am honored to be recognized by such a great museum.”

Chartered by the Board of Regents in 1963, SMLI is located on the Leeds Pond Preserve in Nassau County and offers enrichment workshops for children on weekdays and during school vacations. Visit http://www.smli.org for more information.
