Hannon: Garden City School Aid Increased in State Budget

Senator says he was able to secure $58 million in operating aid for LI schools above what the governor proposed in January.

The Garden City School District will receive an increase of 7.4 percent, in the just-passed state budget for 2013-14, according to Sen. Kemp Hannon.

Long Island school districts overall will receive a collective $121 million increase in school aid under the approved spending plan.

“Education has always been, and continues to be, one of my highest priorities as a legislator, and this year is no exception,” Hannon said. “I was successful in securing $58 million in operating aid for Long Island schools above what the governor proposed in January.”

Hannon was also able to block the governor’s proposal to reduce a category of school funding called “high tax aid,” which could have caused Long Island schools to lose more than $40 million, more than any other region in the state, and have kept Long Island’s share of education aid at almost 13 percent, which is our normal share.

“These are especially good increases in light of the state’s fiscal crisis, in which the state is keeping its own spending increases to under 2 percent,” Hannon said.
