Residents Approve Garden City School Budget

Angela Heineman and newcomer Tom Pinou, who both ran unopposed, will continue serving as school board trustees.

Garden City residents supported the school district’s budget of $101,117,058 million Tuesday night.

The 2011-12 budget, which carries a 2.58 percent tax levy increase, received 1,820 yes votes and 1,081 no votes.

This represents a $3,128,568 or 3.19 percent increase over last year's.

Superintendent of schools Dr. Robert Feirsen said district officials are "delighted." "The community has spoken positively and we look forward to a great year ahead," he said.

Board president Colleen Foley added that the district approves the budget "with great excitement."

School board candidates Angela Heineman and Tom Pinou ran unopposed and were elected to the school board. Heineman received 1,746 votes while Pinou received 1,475 votes.

"The numbers say we just have to work a lot harder next year, " Pinou said of the budget. "We want to make sure that everyone is always happy with the budget. It's hard to make everyone pleased at all times but certainly the numbers say we will continue to work harder."
