Your Childs First Dental Visit

This weeks blog topic is regarding a question we receive often at Whitehall Dental Arts. The question is, "when should I bring my child to the dentist for their first visit?"

Your child's first experience with a dentist should happen before their first birthday. The general rule is six months after eruption of the first tooth. Taking your child to the dentist at a young age not only prevents tooth decay, but also promotes good oral care habits and acclimates the child to the dental office, thereby reducing anxiety and fear.  An early dental visit also helps parents learn how to care for their child's teeth and identify his or her fluoride needs. After all, decay can begin as soon as the teeth erupt.

As a parent, I'm sure your wondering what is to be expected at your child's first dental visit. The first dental visit is generally comprised of icebreakers to acquaint your child with the dentist and the equipment that will be used. A game is played to count the teeth, and if all goes well we get to clean the teeth with a "special toothbrush and toothpaste." Short, successive visits are meant to build your child's trust in the dentist as well as the office. The trust built can prove invaluable if your child needs to be treated later for a dental issue.
