Adelphi Men's Lacrosse Taken Down by Merrimack, 12-8

The stickmen got out to an early 3-2 lead by the conclusion of the first period, but six Merrimack goals in the second quarter ultimately proved to be insurmountable.

On Saturday, the #5 Adelphi men's lacrosse team took on the #4 Warriors of Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.

The stickmen got out to an early 3-2 lead by the conclusion of the first period, but six Merrimack goals in the second quarter ultimately proved to be insurmountable. The Panthers could not climb out of the five-goal hole, succumbing to Merrimack, 12-8. With the loss, Adelphi moves to 6-2, 2-2 NE-10 while the hosts move to 6-0, 3-0 NE-10.

For the Panthers, Michael Rossi and Kieran Riegel combine for six points split between two goals and one assist. Danny Blau dished out two assists and earned one goal while Joe Celano and Shane Wynn rounded out the scoring with a combine three goals. Joe Vitale and Kevin Kennedy each were credited with an assist with Ken Fundus scooping up five ground balls.

Eric Janssen played the full duration of the game, made 15 saves and allowed 12 goals in the loss. The Panthers were outshot 50-19, were outmatched in faceoffs, 15 to eight, and had 10 failed clears compared to Merrimack's two.

For the Warriors, Greg Melaugh led the way with three assists and two goals. Mike Perdie, Corey Lunney and Jamie Shand all chipped in with two goals apiece while DJ Brown, Brandon Waiter, Kyle Guilbert and Paul Gallagher all got a piece of the action with one goal.

Kieran Riegel kicked the game off with an unassisted goal just 3:57 into the opening period. Just 1:15 later, Blau sent a pass in to Rossi who's shot found the back of the cage for Adelphi's second goal of the game.

Merrimack fired back with goals off the sticks of Brown and Melaugh to even the slate at two. Courtesy of a Kennedy pass, Celano got one back as the clock approached the one minute mark to put Adelphi up 3-2.

Off the faceoff to start the second, Lunney, on a man up opportunity, took a pass from Melaugh and scored just five seconds in on the first of six straight Merrimack goals. Shand notched back to back goals, both unassisted to go up 5-3, and then Gallagher and Perdie capped the run with assists from Brad Duhaime and Melaugh respectively to set Adelphi back by four.

Riegel got one back with 25 seconds before halftime, but Melaugh struck again with two seconds left to keep it a four goal game.

Adelphi cut into the lead by one, outscoring Merrimack two to one in the third behind the duo of Blau and Rossi who assisted one another on each other's goals.

In the final 15 minutes, the Panthers could not overcome the difference as Merrimack responded to two Adelphi goals with three of their own to solidify the win.
