2012 Garden City Turkey Trot

Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Day in Garden City means many things to many people, especially with the recent repercussions felt throughout Long Island from Sandy. But to the more than 6,000 runners, walkers and observers it also means kicking off their turkey day with the annual turkey trot.

This years event marks the 35th year that the Turkey Trot, Challenge Run and Fun Run were held and from the beginning, Merrill Lynch has been a key sponsor and partner.

With the Challenger Run and the Fun Run kicking off the day at 9:15 there were many smiling faces lined up on Stewart Avenue waiting for the sound of the horn.  As the horn blared the initial wave of youngsters sprinted off the start line, followed closely by participants of all ages including many being pushed in strollers.

As the 5 mile Turkey Trot weaves its way through Garden City, winding past Cherry Valley Golf Club, Adelphi University, the Middle School and St. Paul's the streets are lined with cheering onlookers urging every runner to keep up the good work. As a race participant there is nothing more energizing as the cheering along Stewart Avenue as you approach St. Pauls for that last mile and a half.

Beneficiaries of this year's race are the American Red Cross, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
