Pink Heals Tour Stops in Garden City

Seventh Street was one of the sites where firefighters gathered to support the Pink Heals and Guardians of the Ribbon.

Monday was an emotional and meaningful day for Garden City firefighter Jerry Cadigan.

The Pink Heals Tour, which supports the fight against breast cancer, made a Long Island stop on Seventh Street Monday in support of the national campaign. The event raised more than $3,000 for the Maurer Foundation.

"My oldest sister, Mary, died of breast cancer," said Cadigan. "As a firefighter I wanted to do something about it. That is why I helped organize this event."

He said he called Pink Heals founder and tour leader Dave Graybill in March and asked him if he'd be willing to come to Long Island.

"I was surprised and honored when he agreed to make the stop in our village," said Cadigan.

Graybill, along with other firefighters from across the country, have been traveling nationwide since mid-August and will continue into early November, driving three pink fire trucks displaying the Guardian of the Ribbon logo.

The event included a pit stop on Seventh Street where a pink colored fire truck was parked between 3-5 p.m. bearing the names of cancer survivors and those whose lives were effected by the deadly disease.

Firefighters also lined the street holding pink boots to collect donations from the general public.

Simultaneous events were also held in Manhasset (sponsored by the Coalition Against Breast Cancer,) and Long Beach (Polar Bears Make A Wish Foundation.)

Afterwards everyone met up in front of the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center for a parade and rally at 6 p.m.
