As of 11:30 a.m. LIPA is reporting 33 households are without power throughout the Town of Hempstead, 29 of which are within the village of Garden City.

Power could be restored by 2 p.m., according to LIPA's outage map.

The power authority is closely monitoring weather conditions and electric usage throughout the area, and will continue to have extra crews available to respond to outages that may be associated with the hot weather.

“LIPA has a sufficient supply to meet customer demand," John D. McMahon, chief operating officer for LIPA, said in a press release. “We remain in close communication with our elected officials, municipalities, the office of emergency management, and our critical care customers and facilities during this sustained heat event.”

The current temperature in Garden City is 96 degrees, but it actually feels like 109 degrees with the heat index. An excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday.

Cooling centers are open for those seeking relief. The senior center on Golf Club Lane and the Garden City Public Library will remain open until 9 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively, on Friday.
