A Gem of A Night at Mumon

Jewelry trunk show exhibits stylings of designer Allison Elizabeth.

Sophisticated, classy and fashionable are just a few words to describe the jewelry of designer Allison Elizabeth, who held her trunk show at Mumon Japanese Restaurant in Garden City March 23.

Allison Becker, the creator and designer of Allison Elizabeth, hosted the show. Shoppers enjoyed complimentary hors d'oeuvres, wine and champagne while browsing her collection.

Growing up, Becker started to make her own jewelry at the age of nine "using anything" she could find to put a piece together.

"I used silk and a broche to make a silk belt," says Becker. "I worked at a dress shop in Lynbrook called The Strapless Dress, and I used to wear my own jewelry, many people noticed my jewelry and were asking how they can get it."

At the age of 19, Becker began selling her own jewelry.

Currently, Pilates for Everyone in Inwood and Flirt, opening soon in Hewlett, sells the Allison Elizabeth collection, all custom-made and fitting for anyone's personality. In addition to designing her own jewelry, Becker is the personal shopper at Lord & Taylor in Garden City, where some of her customers do request her jewelry.

"I do get phone calls sometimes from customers requesting me to make them a necklace, earrings or a ring" says Becker.

Her collection is made up of precious stones and is "individually crafted wearable artwork," according to Becker. Some of the stones used include Rosa Quartz, Amethyst, Pink Opal, Blue Lace Agate and more. Becker aims to collect different stones to create "something out of the ordinary."

Traveling throughout many places to find the stones, including out west to Nebraska all the way to Russia, Becker says she's reached her goal of creating jewelry that is unique and one-of-a-kind.

Prices range from $60 to $400; the average price for a necklace is $120.

The trunk show was a huge success and many people showed their support for Becker.

Shopper Lesley Notkin says Becker's collection is "unique, different and beautiful." Debi Davis, another fan of Becker's pieces, added, "I bought a pair of earrings for my sister's birthday. I myself have three one-of-a-kind pieces and I am getting a fourth. Allison is very talented and I am a big fan."

Becker is trying to make these trunk shows a monthly event, where people can have a night out, enjoy the food at Mumon and get a chance to purchase her unique and beautiful jewelry.
