'Express' Nail Salon, Possible Clothing Store Coming to Garden City

Salon to open at 953 Franklin; retail tenants looking at former Garden City Chemists building.

Vacancies come but often times quickly go in Garden City.

Since Garden City Chemists closed on Seventh Street, two prospective clothing tenants are interested in the space, according to John Wilton, Garden City Merchants, Professionals & Retailers Group.

"This would be wonderful since we had Sugar Plum come in, we have Coquette, we have Chico's. This would be another clothing store. It's very, very vital for the economics of the downtown area."

Garden City Chemists was a completely new business and had no affiliation with the previous drug store that inhabited the same address when it opened in the fall of 2010 at 152 Seventh Street.

Nearby at 953 Franklin Avenue, next to Sushi Ya Japanese Restaurant, Wilton said a lease has been excuted on a "high end, express nail salon."

"The gentleman who owns it is a regional guy. He has quite a few of them. His daughter is going to be running it. He is a manufacturer of nail polish," he said.

The building was sold about 15 months ago, according to Wilton, but Bonaventure Tuxedo stayed on as a tenant in the lower level. The new owner is using the second floor as his business office.

"It's going to be very high end," Wilton said. "He's putting a couple hundred thousand dollars into it. So another nail salon in our village but this one's supposedly going to be an express nail salon and very different than what exists in the market right now."
