Could Garden City's 300+ dogs benefit from a dog park/run?
Last November, Patch asked its readers whether Garden City should establish a dog park for residents only. Several were in favor of the idea, including long time Garden City resident Mort Yuter, who said he campaigned for a park behind the gym on the St. Paul's property more than a decade prior.
"I spoke with Kevin Ocker and gave him reasons why the dog owners in Garden City would like a dog park, the cost for the required fencing ($2,000 at that time) and rules for operation for licensed and rabies vaccinated dogs," Yuter told Patch via email last November from his Raleigh, NC home.
Yuter, who owned a Newfoundland "landseer" during his push for the park, said the Estates Property Owners' Association supported the idea, especially coming from a former president.
At the Oct. 10 Recreation Commission meeting, Eastern Property Owners' Association (EPOA) president Judy Courtney "will be inquiring and discussing the possibility of a dog run," according to recreation director Kevin Ocker.
It was noted at the Sept. 25 Western Property Owners' Association (WPOA) meeting that members are in contact with Ocker about where to create a dog run.
WPOA member Ralph Aquino said talks with Ocker have been ongoing and that a committee will likely be formed to gather more information on where to have it, the pros/cons of having one, etc.
"There is a spot in the East - Grove Park - where there are no resident homes. It's the furthest spot in Garden City," WPOA president Tom Whalen said.
The Recreation Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Paul's Senior Center.
