Crime Blotter: Hazardous Material Violations Cited at Safety Checkpoint

Police discover unsecured gasoline containers, an unsecured acetylene container, open/uncapped fluid containers and missing/improper hazardous material placards.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Sept. 26: A cell phone and a wallet containing cash and credit cards were removed from an unattended pocketbook at Adelphi University.

Sept. 26: A side window to a vehicle parked on Harrison Street was found shattered.

Sept. 27: A catalytic converter was removed from a vehicle parked at the Country Life Press railroad station.

Sept. 28: Two bicycles were reported stolen from the driveway of a Second Street residence. Another bicycle was stolen from the driveway of a Cambridge Avenue residence.

Sept. 28: Police conducted a commercial vehicle safety checkpoint on Nassau Boulevard, inspecting 10 vehicles, placing six out of service and issuing 64 tickets for various traffic and safety violations. One operator was cited for driving with a suspended license and two other operators were cited for unlicensed operation. There were 16 hazardous material violations cited, including unsecured gasoline containers, an unsecured acetylene container, open/uncapped fluid containers, and missing/improper hazardous material placards.

Sept. 28: A personal laptop computer was reported stolen from the Adelphi University Library.

Sept. 28: A snow thrower (value: $1,350) and a tool kit (value: $300) were reported stolen from an equipment shed to a Franklin Avenue business.

Sept. 28: Detectives are investigating an incident where a silver suburban traveling north on Nassau Boulevard apparently lost control and drove over a residential lawn causing damage to the lawn and landscaping before leaving the scene without stopping to exchange information.

Sept. 29: A male 49-year-old from Levittown was arrested on Jericho Turnpike, New Hyde Park, for an outstanding Garden City Village Court warrant for aggravated unlicensed operation signed by Garden City Village Justice Alan Mathers.

Sept. 29: The Garden City Police Department participated in the “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day” sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). During this program, Garden City police officers assisted DEA agents in the collection of unused or expired medications at two locations: Garden City Police Headquarters and the Adelphi University campus where Public Safety officers also assisted in the collections. Several large containers of medications were collected.

Sept. 29: The department is investigating an attempt to open an unauthorized credit card account in the name of a Garden City resident.

Sept. 30: Detectives are investigating an incident in Parking Field 7S where a vehicle struck a parked unoccupied vehicle and left the scene without stopping.

Oct. 1: Four vehicles were entered during the overnight. An iPod was removed from one of the vehicles. There was no reported loss from the other vehicles.

Oct. 1: A 2004 GMC van was reported stolen from the parking yard of an Old Broadway business.

Oct. 2: As a result of a traffic investigation conducted by Officer Russell on Franklin Avenue at Cedar Street, a male 25-year-old from Uniondale was arrested for aggravated unlicensed, second degree for three outstanding NY license suspensions, aggravated unlicensed, third degree for a DMV administrative action, defective brake light and uninsured operation.

Oct. 2: Garden City detectives responded to Hayes Street in the vicinity of the railroad tracks for suspicious persons. While checking the area, they observed a parked vehicle. As they approached the vehicle, they observed the operator smoking marijuana. The subject, a male 18-year-old from Floral Park, was found to be in possession of two marijuana cigars and four bags of marijuana. He was placed under arrest for marijuana possession.

Oct. 2: Garden City detectives conducted an investigation of an iPhone stolen from a vehicle parked on Seventh Street on Sept. 23. The phone was used after the theft and detectives were able to determine the identity of the user. The subject, a male 31-year-old from Westbury, was located on Old Country Road in Westbury and was placed under arrest for possession of stolen property and an outstanding Nassau County warrant for trespass.
