Menges Blood Drive Jan. 18

Garden City residents Jake and Bobby Menges are sponsoring their fourth annual blood drive Saturday, Jan. 18, at their home on Hilton Avenue.

The Long Island Blood Services Bloodmobile will be parked in the driveway of 27 Hilton between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

To date, the boys have collected more than 150 pints of blood and hope to surpass 200 pints collected on Saturday. The brothers also hope to sign up 15 first time donors.

“Giving blood is a great cause," said Bobby, a pediatric cancer survivor and the recipient of regular and numerous blood transfusions. "When I was getting chemo, my red blood counts and platelet numbers were constantly low. If people don’t donate blood regularly, cancer patients like me won’t survive.”

There is a critical need for blood in the area, especially with Type O- being in especially low supply. Donors must be a minimum of 16 years old (with written parental consent), 110 pounds and in good health.
