Historical Society Hopes to Raise $500K for Museum Preservation Work

The building has seen only minimal, minor repairs to the exterior since it was moved to its current location in July 1988.

The Garden City Historical Society Board of Trustees has committed to an ambitious capital campaign to engage in a major facelift for the Museum structure on Eleventh Street.

This campaign is a monumental task with an estimated $500,000 goal, and the Society needs your support.

One of the original buildings constructed in Garden City under founder Alexander Turney Stewart, the Museum has seen only minimal, minor repairs to the exterior since it was moved to its current location in July 1988.

The major scope of renovation and preservation work planned by the Society includes:

  • Roof and Widow’s Walk repairs: replace metal and slate shingles on various sections of the Mansard roof; replace copper flashing; renovate roof drains and install new leaders; repair and restore exterior trim,
  • Windows and Doors: replace sashes and adjust counterweights for windows; strip and install new hardware where needed,
  • Exterior: strip existing paint, prep and restore wood trim; repair soffits; repaint entire structure in period color,
  • Driveway and Parking: re-grade and repair existing gravel driveway and parking lot surfaces.
Some interior renovations to a room adjacent to the Archives will allow the Society to create a Reading Room where visitors can review materials from the Museum collection under supervision by the Society. In addition, minor renovations will be made to existing office space.

“An historically accurate restoration of the Museum, which is located on Eleventh Street just to the east of the Waterworks, an original 1876 structure, will not only enhance the significance of the two historic Garden City properties, but also create an attractive bridge between the businesses on Franklin Avenue and one of our village’s attractive residential sections,” said Albert Intreglia, president of The Garden City Historical Society.

The Society invites community members to attend its May 2 Spring Capital Campaign Benefit (6-9 p.m.) at The Garden City Hotel—Honorary co-chairs Susan Lucci and Nelson DeMille. Reservations for the cocktail reception are $75 per person, and can be made by April 26 by contacting president Albert Intreglia (750-3214, business hours) or Society secretary Gloria Jones (248-0042 or 917-446-6131).

The Historical Society will also take the occasion to honor three illustrious community members: Maureen Clancy, Kris Harder and Mayor John Watras.

The Benefit Committee is sponsoring a 50/50 Raffle; drawing takes place on the night of the event (winner need not be present). Raffle tickets are $10 or three for $25, and can be purchased in advance at the A.T. Stewart Exchange, by contacting Mary Jane Caldwell at 248-5917, or at the benefit event.

A Silent Auction will include such prizes as a rendering of a winner’s home sketched and painted by artist and resident Suzie Alvey; a “Day at the Races” at Belmont Park; a special package of memorabilia and race tickets for a summer’s day at Saratoga Race Track, among other items.

A Chinese Auction is also planned to include such gifts as a Trader Joe’s basket of gourmet products; a gift basket from Covert Avenue’s Salone di Capelli; a special basket from Pellegrini’s Prime Meats; a pamper-yourself gift certificate from Ben Paulino; Stew Leonard’s wine and cheese, restaurant gift certificates to such places as Calageros, Giulio Cesare, Leo’s and La Bottega; bagels from My Three Sons; gift certificates from Hengstenberg’s and Feldis, and more.
