John L. Kordes passed away on the morning of Nov. 8 in his home with his son by his side. He was 89 years old.

He was born in Manhattan in 1923 and served three years in the United States Navy during WWII. Following the war, in 1948, he married his wife, Helen. After living in Roslyn for many years they settled on Avalon Road in Garden City in 1963. They enjoyed 52 years of marriage before she passed away in August 2000.

Mr. Kordes owned and operated Arista Furs at 937 Franklin Avenue for more than 50 years - that was longer than any one individual had ever operated a retail business in the entire history of Garden City.

He is survived by his daughters, Ann and Mary Lee, and his son, John. A small, private service was held for the immediate family and a memorial service will be held for family and friends at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Paul at 110 Cathedral Avenue in Hempstead Saturday, Nov. 24. at 1 p.m. A small reception will follow.

The family asks in lieu of flowers a donation be made in John's memory to a favorite charity.

just reading Jane Goodall with my son for school and came across this quote of an amazing womanRead More "every individual matters, every individual has a role to play, every individual makes a difference." that is what makes our nation, our village so great everyone has an opinion whether we agree with it or not. It just saddens me to think some may not voice their opinion in the future because of the rather harsh comments which I'm sure were just meant to get a point across rather than be hurtful. Garden City residents are not afraid to get involved, to stand up for what they believe in and I am proud to live here.
