Mr. Kordes owned and operated Arista Furs at 937 Franklin Avenue for more than 50 years.

John L. Kordes passed away on the morning of Nov. 8 in his home with his son by his side. He was 89 years old.

He was born in Manhattan in 1923 and served three years in the United States Navy during WWII. Following the war, in 1948, he married his wife, Helen. Mr. Kordes owned and operated Arista Furs at 937 Franklin Avenue for more than 50 years - that was longer than any one individual had ever operated a retail business in the entire history of Garden City.

He is survived by his daughters, Ann and Mary Lee, and his son, John. A small, private service was held for the immediate family and a memorial service will be held for family and friends at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Paul at 110 Cathedral Avenue in Hempstead Saturday, Nov. 24. at 1 p.m. A small reception will follow.

The family asks in lieu of flowers a donation be made in John's memory to a favorite charity.
