Cigarette Starts Fire on Monroe St, Shed Catches Fire on Wilson St

GCFD responds to two fires in less than 24 hours.

Garden City firefighters responded to two fires in less than 24 hours.

The first call reported a fire on Monroe Street at 6:50 p.m. Thursday.

According to the Garden City Fire Department, a cigarette in a wicker garbage basket started a fire in a utility closet off a first floor kitchen.

"The first engine was on the scene in less than two minutes, which confined this fire to the area of origin," Captain Harry G. Frank said. "There was a considerable smoke condition in the residence due to the plastic containers that had also burned."

The second incident was a shed fire in the rear of a residence on Wilson Street at 2:38 a.m. Friday morning. According to fire reports, the first engine was on scene in less than two minutes and had water on the fire within 3:15 minutes from the dispatch of the alarm.

"The fire caused considerable damage to the shed but the quick extinguishment prevented any damage to the residence," Captain Frank said.

This fire appeared to be caused by an electrical short, according to the fire department.
