Crime Blotter: Garden City Middle School Custodian Arrested

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

April 24: Officer Baker observed a male 27-year-old from Mineola driving his vehicle on Old Country Road at a very low rate of speed impeding traffic, while driving in and out of his lane. He was subsequently arrested for Felony DWI (.17 percent blood alcohol content) due to a prior DWI arrest, Felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, two lane violations and uninsured operation.

April 24: The department is investigating an identity theft report where someone filed an unauthorized tax return in the name of another person.

April 24: A cell phone was reported stolen from the cafeteria of Garden City Middle School.

April 25: Officer Wedra and Detective Pedone arrested a custodian, male 34-year-old from Freeport, for the theft of a student’s cell phone at Garden City Middle School on April 24.

April 25: All tires to a vehicle parked in Field 6E were found slashed by an unknown object .


April 27: The Garden City Police Department participated in the “National Prescription Drug Take Back Day” sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). During this program, Garden City Police Officers assisted DEA agents in the collection of unused or expired medications at two locations: Garden City Police Headquarters and the Adelphi University campus where Public Safety officers also assisted in the collections. Several large containers of medications were collected.

April 27: A female 17-year-old from East Williston was issued an appearance ticket for a loud and disorderly party involving numerous youths at a residence owned by her parent on Lincoln Street.

April 28: Officers responded to a gate malfunction at the New Hyde Park railroad crossing.

April 28: Police report a criminal mischief in which a metal sign was thrown through the rear windshield of a vehicle parked at a Nassau Boulevard residence.

April 28: Two bicycles were discovered missing from a Chestnut Street garage.

April 28: Officer Russell stopped a vehicle for erratic driving on Clinton Road that resulted in the arrest of a male 38-year-old from Westbury for DWI (.14 percent blood alcohol content), two lane violations, driving with two license suspensions and uninsured operation.

April 29: A transport van driver states that as he was driving through Garden City an unknown occupant removed a credit card and some lottery tickets from his wallet which was left in a duffel bag.

April 29: Garden City detectives along with Nassau County Probation officers participated in the statewide Night Watch Project by visiting several residents in the village who were on probation for various offenses. As a result of these premise checks, a male 31-year-old was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (suboxone) and an open Long Beach Ordinance Warrant, a male 46-year-old was arrested for possession of marijuana and a male 21-year-old was arrested for possession of marijuana.

April 29: Police conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on Stewart Avenue in the vicinity of St Paul’s: nine vehicles were inspected with four being placed out of service; 49 tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations including defective brakes, defective safety chains and a defective trailer break away cable. 

April 30
: A camera and accessories were stolen from an office at Adelphi University.

April 30: As a result of an investigation, detectives arrested a male 29-year-old from Freeport for a grand larceny at Sears that occurred on Jan. 13, where he and another person used a fraudulent account to buy two televisions and $1,500 in credit cards. The other person, a female 23-year-old from Baldwin, was arrested on Jan. 22.
