Crime Blotter: Alert Resident Outsmarts Thief

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Oct. 9
: Officer Bandl responded to a report of an accident on Clinton Road at Stewart Avenue where four youths fled the scene on foot after their vehicle collided with the rear of another vehicle stopped in traffic. Upon an investigation, a 16-year-old was apprehended and charged with leaving the scene of an accident and unlicensed operation. The subject was driving his father’s auto. The other occupants, age 16, are not charged at this time. There were no reported injuries.

Oct. 9
: A57-year-old woman was arrested at her residence for violation of a Family Court order of protection. The subject violated a behavioral stipulation listed in the order.

Oct. 9
: Officers are investigating a report where a truck collided with a passenger vehicle on Stewart Avenue and fled the scene without stopping northbound on Clinton Road. A passenger in the auto received a shoulder injury.

Oct. 10
: Officers responded to a traffic light malfunction on Rockaway Avenue and South Avenue.

Oct. 10
: Officer Sansone stopped a vehicle for aggressive driving violations on Stewart Avenue at Roxbury Road. The driver was arrested for driving with a license revoked due to a prior DWI arrest, driving with eight additional driver's license suspensions, unsafe lane changes and speeding (55 mph in a 30-mph zone).

Oct. 10
: Someone damaged a light fixture on the exterior wall of the Garden City Public Library.

Oct. 11
: A framed picture was removed from a wall of a Ring Road business office.

Oct. 11
: Officers responded to a railroad gate malfunction at the Cathedral Avenue crossing.

Oct. 11
: Officer Sansone stopped a vehicle for speeding (47 mph in a 30-mph zone) on Stewart Avenue at Wellington Road. It was determined that the temporary Delaware registration on the vehicle was fictitious. The vehicle was impounded and the driver, a 27-year-old man from Brooklyn, was charged with speeding, improper registration materials, unregistered auto and uninspected auto.

Oct. 11
: A handicap parking sticker was reported stolen from a vehicle parked in Field 9E.

Oct. 12
: A computer was removed from a vehicle parked at a Westbury Road residence.

Oct. 14
: A wallet containing credit cards and money was stolen from a lunchroom at a healthcare office on Franklin Avenue.

Oct. 14
: Upon an investigation, Officer Graber charged a 23-year-old man from New Jersey for leaving the scene of an accident on Rockaway Avenue at South Avenue earlier in the day. The subject’s vehicle had apparently veered of the roadway striking and damaging a fence to the property of the Cherry Valley Country Club.

Oct. 15
: Garden City detectives arrested a 25-year-old man from East Hampton for possession of stolen property. On Oct. 12, a Garden City resident reported his outboard motor stolen from his boat in East Hampton. The alert owner was then able to find a seller for the exact same motor on craigslist. Detectives arranged a meeting with the subject to buy the motor in the vicinity of Roosevelt Field Mall. When the subject arrived, it was determined that he was in possession of the stolen motor and was placed under arrest.
