ANNUAL MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE AND PARADE - MAY 28

On Monday, May 28, under the direction of the William Bradford Turner Post - American Legion, the annual Memorial Day observance in our Village will commence with the interdenominational memorial church services at 9:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Incarnation.

The traditional Memorial Day Parade will step off promptly at 10:00 a.m. at the intersection of Stewart and Cherry Valley Avenues.  It will proceed north on Cherry Valley Avenue to Tenth Street, east on Tenth Street to Franklin Avenue, south on Franklin Avenue to Seventh Street, west on Seventh Street past the Reviewing Stand, which will be located at the Village’s War Memorial, just west of the Library, where official ceremonies will take place.  Residents are urged to honor the men and women who gave their lives for our country by attending these services.

THE BELMONT FESTIVAL AT GARDEN CITY - FRIDAY, JUNE 8

The Belmont Festival Committee has advised my office that plans have been finalized for the 15th Annual Belmont Festival at Garden City.  This event will be held on Friday, June 8th from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. on Seventh Street.  Entertainment, live music and plenty of activities for the youngsters are planned and as always, great food.  Back by popular demand will be young dancers from Garden City’s Broadway Bound Dance Center and the Step Dancers from the Fitzpatrick Academy of Irish Dancers.  The Festival’s five great bands include the Fivestone Rock Band, Jerry & the Newcomers, the New Vintage Orchestra, Speak Easy and The Village Music Makers.  There will also be pony rides, face painters and carnival booths with prizes.

Restaurants will compete for the best wings in the “Wing-Off Competition”.  The proceeds of this contest will directly benefit the “Nassau County Firefighter’s Operation Wounded Warrior” program.  Restaurants interested in participating in the Wing-Off should call Tim Peoples at 917-747-3067.

As of this writing, contributing event sponsors include the New York Racing Association and The Garden City Hotel.

In order to accommodate the event as safely as possible, Seventh Street will be cleared of parked vehicles starting at 4:00 p.m. and will be closed to all traffic at that time. Parking fields to the rear of the stores (7S and 7N) will remain open.  If your car is parked on Seventh Street, please make sure that it is removed prior to 4 p.m. so that the Police Department does not need to take action to move these vehicles.

Please mark your calendar and make it a point to attend this annual family event.

SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR SCHOOL CROSSING GUARDS

Regardless of the weather conditions during each school day for the past nine months, our school crossing guards have been at their designated posts to watch over our children.  Please take a minute during the next few weeks to thank them for doing such a fine job to protect our young people.

 BOARD OF TRUSTEES MEETINGS

The next Board of Trustees Meetings will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2012 and Thursday, June 21, 2012 at 8 p.m.  These meetings are held in the Board Room at Village Hall.  I encourage all residents to attend Board of Trustees meetings so as to be thoroughly informed of Village issues from a first-hand perspective.
