Adelphi Frat Brothers to Kick Off Super Hungerfest Saturday

Boys will begin their 24-hour fast to raise money for Island Harvest.

More than four dozen Adelphi University Kappa Sigma frat brothers will begin a 24-hour fast Saturday to help bring awareness to the hunger epidemic on Long Island.

The boys will begin fasting Saturday at 6 p.m. to officially kick off the fifth annual Super Hungerfest, a "brotherhood bonding" event that's gone public to bring awareness to the issue of hunger on Long Island.

Chapter president Alec Wishney, a senior accounting major who last year as treasurer was part of the executive board who organized the first ever 'kickoff' event, said this is his fourth year participating.

"The cause is so important to Kappa Sigma because it's an opportunity for us to give back to our local community in a unique way that appeals to all college students," he said. "Many people do not realize how big of an issue hunger is on Long Island and in our own backyards."

Last year's event raised more than $3,500 and collected more than 600 pounds of food for Island Harvest. Wishney said the fraternity is hoping to exceed that amount this year. Financial contributions and food donations will once again support Island Harvest; 2012 marks the second year Hungerfest is teaming up with the organization.

Approximately 283,700 Long Islanders - nearly 110,000 of them children - face the risk of going hungry every single day. The Hunger in America 2010 report revealed a 21 percent increase in those seeking food assistance on Long Island since its last study in 2006.

The brothers will begin fasting Saturday at 6 p.m. Only clear liquids are allowed. The fast will continue until Sunday at 6 p.m. Wishney said this year's post-fasting plans include gathering around the big screen to root on the New York Giants in their bid to win Super Bowl 2012.

"Plenty of food is provided from sororities, local businesses such a Prime Fine Catering and Adelphi Deli. It truly is a touchdown way to finish off such an amazing weekend," Wishney said.

Kappa Sigma will hold a kick-off event, open to the community, Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Center for Recreation and Sports, Campbell Lounge (second floor). Admission is $3 and will benefit Island Harvest. Non-perishable items are appreciated. The kick-off will include games and events that capture the spirit of the Super Bowl and "carnival-like games raising awareness of the growing number of hungry people on Long Island." A speaker from Island Harvest will also be on hand.

In addition, the brothers will conduct a door-to-door non-perishable food drive; residents are encouraged to leave a bag outside their door prior to 11 a.m. Sunday for pick up.
