Edward Blatz to Receive Chamber Foundation's Business Scholarship

The high school senior was selected by the Garden City High School Business Education and Guidance departments.

One of the initiatives of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce was the formation of a charitable foundation in 2001.

One of the missions of the Chamber Foundation is to award an annual scholarship to a deserving Garden City High School senior who has excelled in the area of business.

It has been announced by E. Christopher Murray, president of the Garden City Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Inc., that Edward W. Blatz, Jr., a senior at Garden City High School, has been selected by the GCHS Business Education and Guidance departments to receive the Chamber Foundation’s 2013 “Althea Robinson Excellence in Business Education Scholarship Award” at the chamber’s 11th annual Pineapple Ball on April 19 at the Garden City Hotel.

This award (renamed by the Foundation this year to honor Althea Robinson for her ongoing assistance to the GCHS Business Education Department) recognizes the student who best exemplifies the spirit of the Garden City business community by achieving academic success in the area of business.

“Deciding on this year’s winner was one of the toughest decisions we have ever had to make regarding this award," reported GCHS business teacher Gene Rochler. “There were quite a few great candidates. Not only did we look at how the student did in the business classes, but we looked at how the student has done across the board during his tenure here at Garden City High School. Ed is one of the finest young students we have ever had the pleasure to teach.”

Ed Blatz has achieved a 95 average in his business classes and an overall GPA of 91 at Garden City High School. He has completed classes in finance, college business management, business law, marketing and advertising and college accounting.

Additionally, Ed was captain of the Long Island championship football team in the fall 2012 and was named Academic All-County and second team All Long Island. He was named All-Conference in basketball and All-County in lacrosse for the 2012 New York championship team.

Ed Blatz participated in a leadership program at Hofstra University in 2012 and completed an internship program at Merrill Lynch. He also volunteered at Island Harvest, New Ground and the Long Beach Wounded Warriors programs.

Ed will attend Georgetown University this fall to study business and play lacrosse.

The chamber looks forward to honoring Edward Blatz along with our extraordinary honorees for 2013: Dr. Anthony (Tony) P. Randi, “Citizen of the Year;” Diane Chapman, “Community Achievement Award” recipient; and Dale Brokaw, Jan McDonough and Lois Tighe, “Business Persons of the Year.”
