NEFCU Sponsors PBS ‘Cyberchase’ Classroom Math Program for Continuing Education Credits at the LI Children’s Museum

On Thursday, March 24, 2011 educators are invited to attend a special PBS Kids Go! Cyberchase in the Classroom Presentation as part of the Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) “Math in the Museum Workshop” series. NEFCU has  partnered with PBS and LICM to offer this fun and free opportunity for local teachers to earn three continuing education credit hours, while learning new ways to teach students how to understand math concepts.

Designed specifically for educators of students ages 8 to 11 (grades 1-6), this creative  math workshop will provide attendees with lesson plan resources, techniques and class activities. From 4:15 to 7:30 p.m., there will be several different opportunities for  teachers to discover how to deepen learning connections in their classroom curriculums through a new investigation of math concepts and interactive exercises.
The incorporation of the Emmy Award-winning PBS animated series, Cyberchase,  promises mathematic lessons packed with excitement, humor and action, with the  ultimate goals of improving kid’s problem-solving math skills, and inspiring them with confidence and enthusiasm toward math.

NEFCU is proud to partner with these two, well-known educational organizations and is pleased that the workshop will underscore its Credit Union mission to teach financial literacy to students at a young age. This workshop will focus on strategies for kids to count money, discuss the importance of saving and practice how to maintain a budget.
By also combining math with history and literature, educators will be shown how historic freedom quilts used by Underground Railroad can be a valuable teaching tool for patterns, geometry, fractions, symbols and codes.

This free workshop will be held at the LICM at 11 Davis Ave. in Garden City. Registration is going on now and is open to all Long Island educators. Refreshments will be served, but seating is limited, so be sure to make a reservation today. For more information or to register online, visit www.myNEFCU.org and click on the Educator
Workshop Banner.

Note: All attendees will be presented with a certificate of completion at the end of the evening. Be sure to  check with your individual school district.
