Dr. Suzanne Viscovich is a 'Woman of Distinction'

Homestead School principal Dr. Suzanne Viscovich was among several honorees Assemblyman Ed Ra honored at his 2013 "Women of Distinction" awards ceremony.

“It is an honor to stand among these distinguished women,” Dr. Viscovich said at the Sept. 28 ceremony held at the Albertson VFW. “Thank you to Assemblyman Ra for selecting me as a one of the 2013 Women of Distinction.”

Garden City's Board of Education recognized Dr. Viscovich at Wednesday's board meeting at Stewart School, where Assemblyman Ra was on hand to share the news with residents. Board president Barbara Trapasso and vice president Angela Heineman are both former Women of Distinction honorees.

"Her dedication to her students at Homestead is worthy of her having this opportunity to be singled out in that distinction," he said.

"One thing common to all the women I had the opportunity to honor that day - every single one of them came up to me at some point and said 'all these other women are great, I don't belong in this category.' They're doing great things, they're making such differences in people's lives but to them it's just all in a day's work."

Prior to her time at Homestead, Dr. Viscovich taught for more than a decade in the district.

Other honorees representing Garden City at the ceremony included Donnalynn Darling; Regina McGowan and Dr. Purnima Popli, who were all recognized for their commitment to bettering the quality of life in the village.

Dr. Viscovich also received citations from county executive Ed Mangano, comptroller George Maragos, county clerk Maureen O’Connell and Town of Hempstead supervisor Kate Murray. Upon her return to Homestead, Dr. Viscovich was surprised with a congratulatory card, a “Celebrating Those Who Inspire” banner and a bouquet of flowers from her staff.
