School Budget Vote Today

Polls open between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. in the high school gym.

The proposed 2011-2012 school budget, $98,275,256, has taken center stage at numerous Garden City Board of Education meetings since early February.

Reminding residents that this is not "business as usual," Superintendent of Schools Dr. Robert Feirsen has acknowledged tough choices had to be made during this year's preparations.

The proposed expense plan reflects a budget-to-budget increase of 3.21 percent and a projected tax levy increase of 4.52 percent (with STAR).

Board of education members adopted the plan at its April 19 meeting and have certainly heard from both sides of the issue. President Colleen Foley, who is on today's ballot, said trustees received hundreds of e-mails, letters and phone calls concerning this year's budget numbers and proposed cuts.

Foley said in April that she believes the budget meets "core programs and the district's mission statement, addresses the economy and provides balance."
