Garden City Girls Defeat CSH 4-3

The game on Saturday morning was a non league match between two undefeated teams with GC having won their first four and Cold Spring Harbor taking their first five games.  The first half was played as expected, fairly evenly with counterattacks by both teams giving the best scoring chances. Cold Spring Harbor came up with several key stops as Haley O’Hanlon, Kayla Murphy and Katherine Malhame were able to get the ball into the box for good scoring chances.  The Lady Trojans finally broke through as Addie Zebrowski worked to get in position in front of the goal and push the ball past a diving CSH keeper.

The first half ended with the score tied at one although GC was applying a lot of pressure in the last 10 minutes of the half without being able to get on top. At halftime coach Heedles made it known that he was not happy with the performance of the team in the first half.  Making a point that the girls weren’t playing aggressive, nor were they moving the ball around like they are capable of.

It apparently lit a fire in the squad as the girls came out on the attack, with O’Hanlon and Lauren Meismer doing a good job in the center midfield, the ball was getting distributed down the sidelines. And early in the half the Trojans got a good chance as Zebrowski made a strong run into the box only to be thwarted by the keeper as she took the feet out from underneath Zabrowski.

The break through for GC came about 13 minutes into the half as Paulette Mohacsi sent a pass across the box that resulted in a CSH foul.  The penalty kick was taken by O’Hanlon, who buried the ball into the corner for the 2-1 GC lead. But CSH would not go down easily and came back with two goals from striker Theresa Fazio to give her a hat trick for the game.  Fazio was able to sneak past the defense and break in on keeper Nicole Chtchekine on both scoring plays and deftly placed the shot into the goal.  The second goal of the half came with about 12 minutes remaining in the game and gave CSH a 3-2 lead.

Garden City tried to pick up the pace with only about 10 minutes remaining and were able to get back into the game as Zebrowski made a terrific run down the right sideline beating several CSH defenders along the way.  As she approached the 18 yard box she sent a perfect cross into the box that Murphy headed over the outstretched hands of the keeper for the tying goal.

With a little over five minutes left in the match, GC continued to press the attack and Cailee McCarthy broke through on the left sideline to send a ball across the field and Meismer was first to it and fired a shot from about 20 yards that beat the keeper into the corner of the goal.  GC had taken the lead and would hold on to keep their record spotless.

The girls play Division on Thursday and the game will be recorded on MSG Varsity.  Then they have an all important showdown with perennial powerhouse South Side next Saturday morning.
