Trojans Return to Defend LI Crown

Garden City's football squad returns to the field Saturday.

On a warm and crisp Saturday morning, the Garden City Trojans returned to the football field for their first scrimmage of the 2010-2011 football year. The defending Long Island and Rutger's Cup champions returned to Warren King Field for a series of scrimmages to hone their skills.

The offense looked to be back on the right track, as junior Mark Ellis led a potent running attack against both Farmingdale and Malverne. Ellis exploded for several big runs in the scrimmages, using his speed to separate from defenders, and using his strength to break away from tacklers.

Behind center, senior quarterback Tom Gordon completed several beautiful passes to his receivers, mixing the completions between quick throws and some nice downfield strikes.

After a season in which the Trojans allowed opposing teams to score only 28 points last season, the Trojans looked a little out of synch against the Farmingdale and Malverne offenses. While mixing in second-team members, the Trojans surrendered several big plays through the air. The secondary did manage a few interceptions, however, as they started to settle in throughout the day.

The Trojans also showed a knack for making the football come loose. Using their speed to track down the ball carrier, the Trojan defense was creating turnovers by stripping the football.
