Crime Blotter: Graffiti on New Rink, Business Burglary, Hit and Run

A look at this week's alleged crimes, reported by the Garden City Police Department.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

April 17: Officers responded to Tanners Pond Road where a vehicle trying to avoid an animal in the road slid on wet pavement before striking a fire hydrant. There were no injuries reported.

April 17: A catalytic converter was reported stolen from a vehicle parked at the Stewart Manor railroad station.

April 17: A male 22-year-old from Massapequa was driving a rental box truck northbound on Cherry Valley Avenue when he struck the Cherry Valley overpass damaging the top portion of the truck. The driver was cited for disregarding the bridge clearance sign.

April 18: A joint investigation of Officer Hudak and a state investigator resulted in the arrest of a male 26-year-old from Farmingdale who was operating a truck on Railroad Avenue for aggravated unlicensed operation due to a license suspension for a prior DWI arrest. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was charged with 19 additional traffic and safety offenses including unsecured equipment, fuel/oil leaks, defective wiring, defective brakes and defective tires.

April 18: A West Hempstead business was issued an appearance ticket for soliciting after employees distributed circulars to residences.

April 18: Graffiti that said, "Let Us Play," was found on the hockey rink outer wall at Community Park.

April 19: Officers responded to a railroad gate malfunction at the Cathedral Avenue crossing.

April 19: Officer Russell stopped a vehicle for speeding (60 MPH in a 30 MPH Zone) on Golf Club Lane. The operator, a male 20-year-old from Brooklyn, was cited for driving with a suspended license and speeding.

April 19: As a result of their investigation, Garden City detectives arrested a male 36-year-old from Freeport for the theft of a pocketbook from a Garden City restaurant on March 1.

April 19: A male 49-year-old from Garden City was issued an appearance ticket for allowing two dogs to run loose on Garden Street causing annoyance and alarm to residents.

April 20: Officers responded to Washington Avenue where a 12-year-old youth was struck by a vehicle. The youth suffered a serious leg injury requiring a transport via ambulance to Winthrop-University Hospital. Witnesses observed the vehicle leave the scene without stopping and assisted the officers in locating the vehicle nearby. The driver, a male 29-year-old from Roosevelt was arrested for felony leaving the scene of an accident and unlicensed operation. 

April 20
: Officers were assigned to a security and traffic detail for the WE Care Road Race.

April 20: Officer Russell stopped a vehicle on Franklin Avenue for driving his auto 55 MPH in a 30 MPH zone on Franklin Avenue. The driver, a male 29-year-old from Valley Stream, was subsequently arrested for DWI (.13 percent blood alcohol content), speeding and a lane violation.

April 21: Officers were assigned to a security and traffic detail for the Bird Sanctuary Earth Day Race.

April 21: The front window to the Cupcake Corner was found broken and money was found missing from a cash register.

April 21: Upon seeing a vehicle on Franklin Avenue strike and jump curbing, Officer Oswald arrested the driver, a male 41-year-old from Flushing, for DWI (.17 percent blood alcohol content), two unsafe lane changes, not wearing a seat belt and defective headlights.

April 21: Officer Touhy arrested a female 18-year-old from Uniondale for the theft of $486 in merchandise from Lord & Taylor.

April 21: Garden City detectives arrested a female 39-year-old from Garden City for giving a false written statement to report a crime. The subject had reported that someone entered her residence and stole jewelry, luggage and electronics valued at more than $38,100. The subject was charged after it was determined that the incident did not occur and the property was accounted for.

April 22: A bike attached to a bike rack at the Stewart Manor railroad station was reported stolen.

April 22: As a result of an investigation of a road rage incident that occurred in Parking Field 7N on April 11, officers arrested a male 54-year-old from Valley Stream for scratching the car of a male 56-year-old from Elmont with a key several times causing approximately $1,500 in damage. He was charged with felony criminal mischief.

April 22: Officers conducted a commercial vehicle checkpoint on New Hyde Park Road resulting in 16 vehicles inspected and 10 being placed out of service. In addition, 92 tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations including seven overweight violations, two over-width violations, three improperly secured load violations and three defective brake violations.

Court News:
A vehicle was impounded on April 18 at the Country Life Press railroad station and another vehicle was impounded on April 19 from Parking Field 9W. Both vehicles were declared scofflaws by the Village Justice Court for unpaid parking tickets.
