Crime Blotter: School Buses Collide, Adelphi Arson

Thirteen children were aboard a school bus that collided with another at Cherry Valley Avenue and Stewart Avenue Dec. 16.

The following arrest information was supplied by the Garden City Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Dec. 11
: A Euston Road resident reports jewelry missing from her residence. The house was found locked with no signs of forced entry. The investigation is continuing.

Dec. 12: Numerous unauthorized transactions totaling more than $3,100 were made against a resident’s debit card.

Dec. 12: A Meadbrook Road resident reports the theft of four packages that were delivered by Post Office.

Dec. 12: Officers assisted the Public Works Department with traffic control due to a water main break in the vicinity of Clinton Road and Vanderbilt Court.

Dec. 12: Police conducted a commercial vehicle inspection on Clinton Road: 14 vehicles were inspected, eight were placed out of service, 62 tickets were issued for various traffic and safety offenses, including 10 overweight violations, two unsecured load violations and four defective brake violations.

Dec. 13: Officers assisted the Public Works Department with traffic control due to a water main break in the vicinity of Transverse Road and Maxwell Road.

Dec. 13: Officers responded to South Avenue in front of Adelphi University for a report of a two-vehicle accident. Upon arrival, officers observed one of the drivers sleeping. The driver, a 43-year-old man from Pennsylvania, had apparently backed into another vehicle. He was subsequently place under arrest by Officer Russell for DWI-Drugs, DWI Alcohol (refused test), unlicensed operation and possession of marijuana.

Dec. 13: Officer Federlein observed a truck disobey a No Commercial Vehicle Sign on Clinch Avenue from New Hyde Park Road. Upon an investigation, the operator, a 26-year-old man from Brooklyn, was placed under arrest for driving with a suspended license, an active New York City traffic warrant and disobeying a traffic sign.

Dec. 13:  Police and Special Police officers assisted with security and traffic control for the New Hyde Park Road tree lighting ceremony.

Dec. 13: The department is investigating an identity theft where an unknown person obtained credit cards in a resident’s name and used the cards to make purchases valued at approximately $10,000.

Dec. 14: Officers responded to a hazardous condition caused by a water main break at Sears.

Dec. 14: A 49-year-old man from Flushing was driving east on Lydia Lane when he lost control on the icy/snowy pavement causing his vehicle to strike and knock down a fire hydrant. No injuries were reported.

Dec. 16: Officers responded to the Merillon Avenue train station for a report of a suspicious item on the platform. Upon investigation, it was determined that the item was a backpack contained clothing. The item was removed without incident.

Dec. 16: Officers responded to Cherry Valley Avenue and Stewart Avenue for a report of a minor accident involving two privately owned school buses. There were 13 students in one bus and no students in the other bus. There were no reported injuries. The occupied bus was from West Hempstead traveling to St. Anne’s.

Dec. 16: Garden City detectives arrested a 46-year-old woman from Stewart Manor for making numerous harassing phone calls to a man in Garden City. She was charged with aggravated harassment.

Dec. 17: Officers responded to numerous accidents throughout the village caused by icy, slippery road conditions.

Dec. 17: The Fire and Police Departments responded to a fire call at Adelphi University's Eddy Hall. The building, a dorm, was evacuated and upon investigation of the GCPD, GCFD, Adelphi Public Safety and the NCPD Arson Squad, an 18-year-old from Richmond Hill was arrested for recklessly starting a fire in a garbage receptacle on the first floor. There were no reported injuries and there was minor damage from the fire.
