Police divers found a handgun near the bank of Sandy Beach State Park in Cold Spring Wednesday and officials believe it's the weapon Sang Ho Kim used to kill and seriously injure two employees at a lighting company in East Garden City Sept. 25.

A massive manhunt ended when Kim's body washed ashore in Rockland County, near the Bear Mountain Bridge, Sept. 30.

Authorities at the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said New York State Police divers, working with Nassau County Police homicide detectives, recovered the handgun from the river near the bank of Sandy Beach State Park in Cold Spring.

The weapon was recovered near where authorities had found the parked car belonging to Kim hours after the shooting, according to Putnam police.

Whether the gun discovered is the one used in the crime cannot be confirmed until the weapon undergoes ballistic testing, Putnam police said Wednesday.

“Families who visit the park need no longer worry that this gun might be lying somewhere along the shore or just off a trail where a child might find it and pick it up,” Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith said in a statement, adding that the recovery of the gun "puts to rest a concern on the minds of some area residents."
