‘Project Style’ Rolls Into Roosevelt Field Mall

Teens meet the experts for tips on how to look their best for the new school year.

Gearing up for the upcoming school year? The all-new Project Style tour made a stop at Roosevelt Field Mall this weekend to provide fashion tips for trend-setting teens.

"We all know how important it is for teens to look and feel their best on their first day back to school," says Kathleen Herrmann, area director of mall marketing of Roosevelt Field Mall and The Mall at The Source. "And we're excited to provide free consultations to help kids get the style they want ... to fit their personalities before they return to the classroom."

Patch visited the Project Style stations with two self described teen fashionistas and soon-to-be Garden City High School freshmen, Megan Galioto and Alena Sceusa, to check out the latest trends.

Dermalogica Clean Start Dermalogica has been in the skin business for 25 years. Christina Henderson and Stephanie Enriquez presented their new line: Dermalogica Clean Start. Clean Start is native to California, created by the skin health experts at Dermalogica to help teens build a better relationship with their skin. The products smell fresh and clean and do not contain artificial fragrances or color.

"We're here to educate teens on the importance of washing, moisturizing and taking care of breakouts," says Henderson.

Hair Care – Johnny Kelly, a student at the Cactus Academy - Paul Mitchell Partners School, was on hand to demonstrate quick do's for back-to-school sans heat tools such as a hair dryer or flat iron.

Kelly deftly transformed Sceusa's fine hair into an adorably coiffed pony tail with strands of her hair wrapped around the elastic for a soft, high-styled look.

Caitlin Furnari, a licensed cosmetologist who works for Aveda, worked on Galioto's hair. "I left it down but pulled it back with a twist," Furnari said. "The trend in hairstyles is moving toward simplicity like wearing your hair straight or going with your natural waves."

Virgin Mobile Can't have a gathering of teens without talking about technology. Virgin Mobile talked to teens about their "Beyond Talk" plans.  Consider that texting took off in the United States in 2000, most teens don't remember a day texting didn't exist.

Jasher Pineda and Rudy Calderon of Virgin Mobile advised that the plan was developed for the heavy data user, texter and frequent e-mail user.

Virgin Mobile's plan is simple: $25 a month for unlimited messaging, e-mail, web and data plus 300 minutes. There are no contracts to sign.

Memorable Elements – Need a photo flipbook in 90 seconds? Virgin Mobile hosted Memorable Elements, creators of instant photo flipbooks. Memorable Elements sets up a small studio area and takes a short video clip. The video is turned into a custom photo flipbook in less than two minutes.

"This is a new innovation for weddings and any type of party," says Tara Purnell.

Auntie Anne's Pretzels – Teens love snacks and Auntie Anne's Pretzels provided tasty samples for the crowd. Auntie Anne's purveyors of hand-rolled pretzels features flavors such as almond, pepperoni, sesame, cinnamon sugar, garlic or jalapeno. Pretzels are baked and served hot.

Nintendo – For the teen gamer, Nintendo provided demos for its new DS handheld game, Dragon Quest IX, Sentinels of the Starry Skies, an adventure game that allows players to explore a fantastic world of magic and monsters. The game can be played alone or with friends.

Coca-Cola and Modelinia – Are you more Tyra or Gisele? Is your style contemporary chic, rule breaker, modern boho or classic sophisticate? Teens had an opportunity to find out by taking a Modelinia Stylizer Quiz sponsored by Coke and Modelinia, a website which focuses on supermodel beauty and style tips. The quiz provided teens with a personalized shopping list that matches their style.  Free coke was also handed out to the crowd.

The mall exhibit is just one of 25 tour stops sponsored by Roosevelt Field's owner, Simon Property Group.
