Vintage Handbag Exhibit at Garden City Library Evokes Nostalgia

October showcase display features an eclectic array of vintage handbags and accessories.

Lovers of all things vintage are in luck this month.

The Garden City Public Library’s October showcase display is featuring a vintage handbag and accessories collection loaned by vintage enthusiast Ellen F. Broder.

Broder has been collecting one-of-a-kind vintage handbags, jewels and accessories since she was a teen. It was one purchase at a thrift shop that got her hooked.

“It was a thrill that no one else had anything like that sweater,” said Broder.

She has traveled far and wide in support of her “one-of-a-kind mantra.” Her hobby has taken her across the United States and Europe. Her collection includes handbags, costume and fine jewelry, hats and clothing.

The collection on exhibit provides a snapshot of fashion trends from the roaring 20s through the 70s.

An eclectic collection of tapestry, including two dimension bags, originating from the early 1900s to the 60s, showcases the old world quality of these timeless pieces.

One particularly colorful display showcases the 60s, which includes the ubiquitous bathing cap every 60s mom wore while swimming. The display is also replete with sunglasses, a bucket bag and travel case. Beaded bags in a variety of colors and styles also represent this era’s hip style.

“Many of these items are timeless,” shared Broder. “Bucket bags are still featured in ‘Vogue.’”

The 50s are given a shout out via fun and colorful plastic bags, many are coated while some are see-through plastic. Plastic accessories debuted during the 40s and 50s and were viewed by women as ultra modern.

Bags by designer Enid Collins are also on display. Collins began creating fun, whimsical handbags after World War II. Her bags were a “must-have” accessory from the 50s through the early 1970s. Collins was known for creating themed designs and bags were given titles. A lovely handbag dubbed “Jewel Garden IV” evokes classic Collins style.

Highlights of the exhibit also include a purple carpet bag, a remnant of the 70s shag sensation; a saddle bag inspired by 50s cowboy theme; and one-of-a-kind handmade bags.

“Women made these bags by hand with lots of care,” added Broder. “No such thing as glue guns back then.”

The exhibit is chock full of fashion accessories boasting an interesting provenance and certainly evokes a passion for all things vintage.

Exhibits are free and open to the public during regular library hours. Funding for gallery and showcase exhibits is provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library.
