Revamped Mini Golf Course Affordable Family Fun

Garden City's 18-hole course is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. through Sept. 6.

It's not summer if you haven't officially played a round of mini-golf. Fortuitously, Garden City's pool complex boasts a state-of-the-art 18-hole miniature golf course along with a shaded picnic area. The course is located behind the Garden City Pool complex, adjacent to the Tennis Center and is open mid-April through Columbus Day.

During the summer months, the complex is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. through 10 p.m. through Sept. 6.

Pool membership is not required to play the course and non-residents are welcome to take advantage of this fun-filled activity. Plus, it's a relative bargain.  Ticket prices for Garden City residents are $3 for children under 12 years old, $3 for seniors and $5 for adults. Non-resident fees are $4 for children 12 and under and $6 for non-residents 12 and over.

Newly constructed in 2008, the course is a terrific family pastime. Each hole offers its own unique putting challenge. The course's twists and turns are offset by beautiful landscaping, water obstacles and elevated greens.

"It's a great little course and a great family activity, that's why we revamped it," explains Kevin Ocker, chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Cultural and Recreational Affairs. "It's interesting enough that you can play the course often during the season."

Just ask 11-year-old golfers Chris Ciurcina and Chris Giorgio.

"I love mini-golf and this complex is so fun to play," says Ciurcina. "I love playing with my friends, especially when you win by one point when you think you're going to lose!"

The golfers just completed a friendly game with a score of 55-56 in Ciurcina's favor. Ciurcina, who usually shoots in the 30s or 40s, said he would play every day if he could.

All in good fun, fellow golfer Giorgio was taking his loss in stride.

"I come to the pool every day and I play five times a week," he said. "I like a little competition, I usually shoot in the 40s or 50s."

Garden City High School graduate John Cassano works at the complex and said he enjoys seeing the kids so happy and that it really is an exciting course.

If you're planning a birthday party or group outing, the complex also offers packages which include reserved use of the picnic area for two hours and one round of miniature golf.

The complex also features some exciting special events during the summer season. A mini-golf championship tournament will be held Friday, Aug. 13 from 2- 8 p.m. The fee is $6 per person and includes two rounds of golf. Sign-ups begin Monday, Aug. 8.

On Saturday, Aug. 7, get ready for glow-in-the-dark mini-golf night. The course will be on the "dark side" with glow-in-the-dark holes and assorted glow necklaces for all golfers. The fee is $4 per person, which includes music, one round of golf and a necklace.
