Andy Foundation Yard Sale Raises Over $20K

Eighth annual sale is a resounding success as the mission to help less fortunate children continues.

The Andy Foundation’s eighth annual yard sale May 7 was a resounding success thanks to overwhelming community support.

Scores of volunteers helped out the day of the sale at the St. Paul's School Field House while donations have been pouring in for the last couple of weeks. The event drew large crowds of shoppers, netting over $20,000 for the charity.

“It was a tremendous community effort,” said trustee Jill Palmeri. “I thank everyone for coming out to support the foundation. The volunteers worked tirelessly. We’re going to meet shortly to decide how the funds will be allocated and what children's charities we will be supporting. Our volunteers, especially the kids, are looking to get involved with a hands-on effort.”

The Andy Foundation is a registered charitable organization formed by friends of Andrew Palmeri, who tragically died at age 11 after being hit by a car in 2003. The charity's motto is "By Kids - For Kids." Andy's family, young friends and their parents began a mission of helping less fortunate children.

Funds raised through yard sales, football clinics and other grassroots events support children's charities. Projects the foundation has funded include a playground for autistic children at The Martin Burrel School in Commack as well as furnishing and decorating a safe house for battered women and children in the Bronx.

In January 2010 the foundation received recognition for its efforts by being inducted into The Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame.

Many of the volunteers at the yard sale have been involved with the charity since its inception. High school students Matt Slovesky, Peter D’Antonio and Jack Spencer have been working at the yard sale since they were in middle school.

“We look forward to it every year,” said Spencer. “It’s a great event.”

Shopper Diane Olsen attends the sale every year as well. “The Andy Foundation raised funds for a school my son attends so I like to give back,” she said.

Andy Palmeri was known for his generous nature and the foundation has pledged to continue keeping his spirit of generosity alive.

The foundation also runs the High Top shop located at 671 Franklin Avenue. All items are donated and proceeds benefit the foundation. Donations are accepted on an ongoing basis. If interested in donating items, stop by the shop, call 747-1317 or email at hightopshop@verizon.net.
